Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... DISEASES OF THE NEWBORN. Hypertonia. Heim1 writes that the old idea that all babies are born alike has long since been given up. Czerny was the first to emphasize the constitution of the child, and laid stress upon the so-called |exudative diathesis,| thinking he could influence it with diet. The true nature of such a diathesis lies in the fact that the reaction of organism to physiologic and pathologic stimuli differs from the normal. Thus one group of children will not gain on breast milk, even though getting it in sufficient quantities. Some of these are exudative in type, some do not belong to any particular group. Still others seem to show sufficient characteristics in common to be classed by Heim as a new group--the hypertonic. Hochsinger described these nurslings in his book in 1900, placing them in the category of |spasms of childhood.| He believed the condition to be due to a continuous muscular spasm and named it' myotonia.' This is unfortunate, as the condition must not be confused with the congenital myotonia, so Heim suggests the term |hypertonia.| It seems due to a prolongation of the physiologic hypertonicity of the newborn.
